Basic strategy is a fixed set of mathematically optimal decisions for every hand-total vs. dealer-up-card combination — it doesn't beat the house edge, but it minimizes it more than any other approach.
With a hand totaling 17 or higher (no Ace counted as 11), standing is correct against any dealer up-card — the risk of busting outweighs the potential gain from hitting.
You cannot bust on a hit from a hard total of 8 or below, so hitting is always correct regardless of the dealer's up-card.
Against most dealer up-cards, doubling down on a total of 11 is the highest-value play — you're taking exactly one more card with a strong chance of reaching a total near 21.
A pair of Aces or 8s should almost always be split — two hands starting strong beat one weak hand of 16 or a capped-value 2. A pair of 10-value cards (already a strong 20) should never be split.
Basic strategy applies identically to RNG and live-dealer blackjack — the underlying math doesn't change based on format. It reduces the house edge to roughly 0.5-1% on standard rules, the lowest of any casino game format on this list, but it's still a negative-expectation game over the long run.
