Alex Kovaç — Binroll Gambling Analyst

I read the bonus terms on every site in our directory and run the same arithmetic on each one. This article is that arithmetic, not a summary of marketing pages.

⚡ Quick answer: the real value of a bonus is Bonus × (1 − house edge × wagering). At a realistic 3% house edge, the breakeven rollover is 33x. A $200 bonus at 40x is worth −$40 — clearing it costs more than the bonus is worth. Rakeback with 0x wagering is worth its full face value, which is why Thrill, Duelbits and Gamdom sit above every deposit match in this comparison.

What a Wagering Requirement Actually Is

A wagering requirement — also called rollover or playthrough — is a total turnover figure you must bet before bonus funds and anything won with them can be withdrawn. It is written as a multiple: 30x, 40x, sometimes 45x.

The number itself is not the problem. The problem is what happens while you produce that turnover. Every bet you place pays the house edge on average, so a large required turnover is a large guaranteed cost. A bonus is not free money with a delay attached; it is money you rent, and the rent is the edge multiplied by the turnover.

That reframing is the whole article. Once you price the rent, comparing bonuses becomes arithmetic rather than a beauty contest between headline numbers.

The Formula That Decides Everything

Real Value = Bonus × (1 − House Edge × Wagering)
If the bracket is negative, the bonus costs you money to claim.

Read it left to right. You receive the bonus. To keep it you must generate turnover equal to the wagering multiple. That turnover costs you the house edge on every unit. If the expected loss on the turnover exceeds the bonus, the offer is negative expected value before you place a single bet.

Two inputs matter and only one of them is advertised. Casinos publish the wagering multiple prominently and the house edge of the games you will clear it on almost never. If you are unsure what edge you are playing against, our guides on roulette, baccarat and plinko give the real figures per game.

The Breakeven Table — 1 Divided by the Edge

Set the bracket to zero and solve. Breakeven wagering is simply 1 ÷ house edge. Below that multiple a bonus is worth claiming; above it, it is not.

House edge of the game you clear onBreakeven wageringTypical CS2 exampleVerdict at 40x
1% (blackjack, low-edge Originals)100xBasic-strategy blackjackStill positive
2% (well-configured Originals)50xDice at a low targetMarginally positive
3% (realistic blended average)33xMixed slots and OriginalsNegative
5% (typical slot)20xMost slot titlesHeavily negative
10% (case opening, some wheels)10xCase sites, spin wheelsBonus fully consumed

The line that matters: 3% is a fair blended estimate once you mix slots with Originals, which is what most players actually do while clearing. That puts the practical breakeven at 33x — and the industry standard sits at 35x to 45x. The default offer is designed to land just past the line.

Worked Example on a $200 Bonus

Same bonus, same player, three different rollover multiples, all at a 3% house edge:

WageringRequired turnoverExpected loss at 3%Real value of the $200 bonus
20x$4,000$120+$80
30x$6,000$180+$20
33x$6,667$200$0 — breakeven
40x$8,000$240−$40
45x$9,000$270−$70

Notice how narrow the useful band is. Between 30x and 40x the offer swings from mildly worth taking to actively costing you money, and both numbers look equally reasonable in an advert. This is why "up to $2,000" tells you almost nothing on its own.

The Deposit-Plus-Bonus Trap

This is the term that catches more players than the multiple itself, and it hides in a single word.

Bonus-only rollover applies the multiple to the bonus. 40x on a $200 bonus is $8,000 of turnover.

Deposit-plus-bonus rollover applies it to your deposit and the bonus combined. The same 40x on a $200 deposit with a $200 bonus is 40 × $400 = $16,000 of turnover.

Same headline, double the cost. Measured against the bonus alone, that second structure is effectively 80x. At a 3% edge the expected loss on $16,000 of turnover is $480 against a $200 bonus — a real value of −$280. Stake.com and Roobet both apply their multiples to deposit plus bonus, so read that line before anything else.

The practical test takes five seconds: find the wagering clause and check whether it says "bonus" or "deposit + bonus". If it says the latter, mentally double the multiple before comparing it to anything.

Why Rakeback Beats Deposit Bonuses

Rakeback returns a percentage of what you have already wagered, and on the platforms above it carries no wagering requirement at all. Thrill credits instant rakeback that is withdrawable directly as crypto. Duelbits pays rakeback as withdrawable cash at 0x, and its free spin winnings pay out the same way. Gamdom adds its 15% straight to your real money balance.

Put that through the same formula. With wagering at zero, the bracket becomes (1 − 0) = 1, so real value equals face value. A dollar of no-wagering rakeback is worth a dollar. A dollar of 40x bonus at a 3% edge is worth minus twenty cents.

The comparison nobody advertises: a $200 deposit bonus at 40x is worth −$40. A $40 rakeback credit at 0x is worth +$40. The smaller headline number is worth $80 more. Headline size and real value are not just different — on these terms they point in opposite directions.

This is the same logic our rakeback guide works through from the other direction, and it is why rakeback percentage is a better thing to shop on than bonus size.

When a Bonus Is Worth Claiming

The formula cuts both ways. There are conditions under which a deposit match is clearly worth taking:

  • The multiple sits under the breakeven for your game. 40x is fine if you genuinely clear it on 1% blackjack, where breakeven is 100x — provided the game contributes fully.
  • Rollover applies to the bonus only. That halves the cost against an identical deposit-plus-bonus offer.
  • You were going to wager that volume anyway. If the required turnover is below your normal monthly play, the bonus is a rebate on activity that was already happening.
  • There is a no-lock alternative. Rainbet's progressive path converts less on paper but keeps what it converts.
  • The max bet cap fits your stake size. A 5% cap on a small deposit forces a very large number of small bets, and every one pays the edge.

If none of those apply, the honest answer is to skip the bonus and take rakeback instead. Declining a bonus is a legitimate move, and on 40x deposit-plus-bonus terms it is the mathematically correct one.

5 Mistakes That Void a Bonus Entirely

Losing a bonus to a technicality is worse than never claiming it, because you have already paid the turnover cost.

  • Exceeding the max bet while wagering is active. Roobet caps bets at 5% of deposit plus bonus per round. One oversized bet, even accidental, commonly voids everything.
  • Clearing on excluded or low-contribution games. Many low-edge games contribute 10–20% of each bet, so the turnover counts at a fraction while the clock runs.
  • Missing the activation window. Gamdom's rakeback must be activated within 6 hours of registration or it is forfeited — before you place a single bet.
  • Withdrawing before the requirement clears. On most platforms an early withdrawal cancels the remaining bonus and any winnings attached to it.
  • Assuming spins follow the deposit terms. They often do not. Rainbet's locked path applies 40x to spin winnings; Duelbits pays spin winnings at 0x.

Frequently Asked Questions

It means you must place total bets equal to 40 times a reference amount before bonus winnings can be withdrawn. On a $200 bonus with bonus-only rollover that is $8,000 in turnover. The catch is which amount the multiple applies to: if it applies to deposit plus bonus, a $200 deposit with a $200 bonus at 40x becomes $16,000 in turnover, which is the same as 80x on the bonus alone. Always check whether the term reads bonus or deposit plus bonus, because that single word doubles the requirement.
Use Real Value = Bonus × (1 − house edge × wagering). A $200 bonus at 40x wagering played on games with a 3% house edge gives 200 × (1 − 0.03 × 40) = 200 × −0.2 = −$40. The bonus is not worth $200, it costs you $40 on average to clear. The same bonus at 30x gives 200 × (1 − 0.9) = +$20. Small changes in the multiple flip the sign of the whole offer.
Breakeven wagering equals 1 divided by the house edge. At a 1% edge it is 100x, at 2% it is 50x, at 3% it is 33x, at 5% it is 20x and at 10% it is 10x. Above that multiple the expected loss from the required turnover exceeds the bonus itself. Since 3% is a realistic blended edge across slots and Originals, 33x is the practical line for CS2 casinos, and most welcome bonuses sit above it at 40x.
Generally no, and that is the whole reason it beats deposit bonuses. Thrill credits instant rakeback of up to 70% with no wagering, withdrawable directly as crypto. Duelbits pays 50% rakeback as withdrawable cash with zero wagering. Gamdom's 15% rakeback for the first seven days is added to the real money balance and can be cashed out immediately. A dollar of no-wagering rakeback is worth a full dollar; a dollar of 40x bonus is worth less than nothing.
Fastest and cheapest are two different questions. Slots usually contribute 100% toward wagering but carry the highest edge, often 3% to 6%. Low-edge games like blackjack or a well-configured Originals game may carry a 1% edge but frequently contribute only 10% to 20% of each bet toward the requirement, which cancels the advantage. Read the game contribution table before choosing where to clear, because a 100%-contribution game at a 5% edge is the worst possible combination.
Usually yes for the player. Rainbet offers a choice between a wager-locked path at 40x and a No Wager Lock path that releases bonus funds progressively as you play. The locked path can pay more in the best case but requires clearing turnover that is negative expected value at a realistic house edge. The progressive path converts a smaller amount into money you actually keep. If you are not planning heavy volume anyway, the unlocked option is almost always the better arithmetic.
Most bonus terms cap the size of any single bet while a wagering requirement is active. Roobet, for example, limits bets to 5% of the combined deposit and bonus per round. Breaking the cap, even once and by accident, commonly voids the entire bonus and any winnings from it. It also stretches the clearing period, since a large turnover requirement combined with a small maximum bet means a very high number of individual bets, and every one of them pays the house edge.
It varies and the difference is large. On Rainbet's wager-locked path, free spin winnings carry the same 40x requirement as the bonus. On Duelbits, free spin winnings pay out as raw withdrawable cash at 0x. Spins advertised with the same headline number can therefore be worth completely different amounts. Check the spin terms separately from the deposit terms, because platforms frequently apply different rules to each.
Typically 7 to 30 days depending on the platform, and the clock is part of the cost. A short window on a large turnover requirement forces higher stakes than you would otherwise choose, which increases variance and the chance of losing the deposit before the bonus clears. BC.Game's sportsbook offer, for example, requires 20x on accumulators of three or more selections at minimum odds of 1.50 within 7 days. Treat a tight deadline as an additional condition, not a detail.
Judged on value after wagering rather than headline size, no-wagering rakeback wins. Thrill offers up to 70% instant rakeback with no wagering and immediate crypto withdrawal, Duelbits pays 50% rakeback as withdrawable cash at 0x, and Rainbet lets you skip the lock entirely on a $2,100 package. Among deposit matches, Roobet's 30x and Flush's 30x first tier are the only ones that sit at or under the 33x breakeven line.
